Access to reliable data center power capacity is becoming the single biggest bottleneck in scaling AI infrastructure. Soma Energy just raised $7M in seed funding to fix it, and the team behind it has done this before.

The team that already solved this at AWS

Soma was built by the crew that scaled Amazon Web Services’ energy infrastructure to 10 GW. They know grid constraints, interconnection delays, and large-scale power management firsthand. That experience is the foundation of everything they’re building.

Category Ventures led the round, with Haystack, RRE Ventures, Uncork Capital, and others backing the vision.

Why data center power capacity is a critical problem

U.S. data center power demand is projected to hit 106 GW by 2035. The grid cannot build generation and transmission fast enough to meet that demand. Traditional infrastructure takes five to ten years to come online. AI doesn’t wait five years.

Soma’s platform uses AI to unlock existing grid capacity that is already there but underutilized, delivering power to data centers in months rather than years, at a fraction of the cost of new infrastructure.

The platform already optimizes 2 GW for power producers and is live with five data center clients.

The answer to the data center power capacity crisis isn’t building more, it’s operating smarter. Soma connects on-site generation, storage, and load into a single control layer, turning large facilities into flexible grid assets.
